Marcia Hines

Marcia Hines was born in Boston, U.S.A in 1953. After singing blues and gospel in churches and festivals she was signed as a sixteen year old by legendary Australian promoter Harry M. Miller.

Miller cast Marcia in the hit musical Hair and later as Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar. Marcia toured extensively throughout the U.S and Russia as part of the Daly Wilson Big Band. She signed with Robbie Porter’s Wizard label (Robbie Porter known as Rob E.G, had a successful music career in Australia in the 50s and 60s).

Her first two singles, James Taylor’s ‘Fire and Rain’ and ‘From The Inside’ made top ten. Marcia’s third single ‘I just don’t know what to do with myself’ originally a worldwide hit for Dusty Springfield, reached number three in September 1976. The song stayed in the charts for a staggering twenty-one weeks.
Marcia was crowned Queen of Pop in 1976 and won it again in 1977. Marcia is one of the few female Countdown acts to sustain chart success.

In more recent years Marcia has become well-known with younger audiences through her role as judge on Australian Idol. In 2007, Marcia was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
